Continuing the background news following up to the creation of the USSR, I present: the February Revolution! Despite it's name, it actually began on March 8th, 1917, but on the Julian calendar (which Russia was using at the time) it was February 23rd. The people took to the streets to protest against the Czar. The Czar ordered for members of the Petrograd army garrison to shoot at the protestors, however, after a day, the army members switched sides. This forced the imperial government and Czar Nicholas II to surrender. Nicholas and his family were executed afterwards.
